Tax Disputes

There are times when businesses and individuals may find themselves in the crosshairs of the IRS or a state taxing authority. Post Polak has a passion and the expertise for assisting those with tax controversies.  We have negotiated many settlements with the IRS, the State of New Jersey, the State of New York and the State of California that have helped businesses and individuals out of the very difficult and trying situations that come along with major tax problems. From the prospect of a difficult audit to the complete shutdown of a business or one's bank accounts, we have the experience and knowledge to work with the taxing agencies and our clients to reach settlements that allow clients to continue on in their businesses and in their lives.
Among recent notable achievements in this area are guidance and resolution of unreported foreign accounts; the successful resolution of "eggshell audits," where there is the possibility of criminal liability; successful offers in compromise with the IRS; the negotiation of payment plans that are affordable and settle for far less than the original debt; putting clients into "currently uncollectible" status if their situation indicates that they cannot pay anything to the taxing authority; the abatement of large penalties; the resolution of several large state sales tax matters and trust fund (employment tax) matters; and working with divorce attorneys to unravel many years of tax non-compliance on the part of clients attempting to reach a reasonable divorce settlement.
When necessary, we take your tax matter through the appeals process or to state or federal tax court.  Resolving tax controversies takes dedication, knowledge, patience and thoroughness, skills that Post Polak has honed over many years of practice.
